New Delhi . Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the political situation in the state and COVID management. Former Union Minister and Apna Dal chief Anupriya Patel also joined the deliberations. Adityanath’s meeting with Shah lasted for about 90 minutes. Sources said that their discussions revolved around preparations for next year’s Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and a possible cabinet expansion or reshuffle in the state.
The BJP’s performance in the recent panchayat polls was also discussed and it was decided to focus on electing its members as district panchayat presidents before the polls, sources said.
A source said, the strategy to win more and more posts of Zilla Panchayat President has also been discussed in the meeting.
Patel was a minister of state in the first Narendra Modi government, but failed to get the post in her second term. She is demanding a ministerial post for herself in the Modi cabinet and a ministerial post for her husband Ashish Patel in the state.
Sources said she is also demanding the posts of district panchayat presidents of five districts – Mizarpur, Jaunpur, Pratapgarh, Banda and Farrukhabad.
Shah also held a separate meeting with Patel after Adityanath left.
Adityanath reached the national capital on Thursday. On his Friday morning Prime Minister Modi and in the afternoon BJP President J. Hope to meet P. Nadda also.
Sources said preparations for next year’s assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh will be the main agenda of Adityanath’s meeting with the party’s central leadership.
Sources also say that the Uttar Pradesh government’s handling of the COVID situation during the second wave of the pandemic is also likely to be discussed during the meeting.
While the opposition has criticized the state’s efforts to tackle COVID-19, the BJP leadership has lauded the work done by the Uttar Pradesh government.
Adityanath’s visit to New Delhi has fueled speculations about the Uttar Pradesh cabinet and possible changes in the party’s structure ahead of next year’s assembly elections.
A party insider said, a possible cabinet expansion or reshuffle is also likely to be discussed in the meeting. Changes in the state BJP unit are also part of the agenda to strengthen the party ahead of next year’s assembly elections.
BJP’s national general secretary (organisation) B. L. Santosh and state in-charge Radha Mohan Singh visited Lucknow to review the party’s preparations for next year’s assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
Santosh took feedback from state ministers and MLAs, fueling speculation about the party’s possible transition to Uttar Pradesh.
Sources claimed that based on the feedback collected by the central leadership, it has been decided to reshuffle the Uttar Pradesh government as well as the state unit of the party.
Sources also said that the role of former Union minister Jitin Prasada, who quit the Congress and joined the BJP on Wednesday, will also be discussed during Adityanath’s meetings with the central BJP leadership.
A famous Brahmin face in Uttar Pradesh, Prasad’s father Jitendra Prasad is known as a prominent Brahmin leader in Uttar Pradesh.
