Beirut | UNESCO has launched a partnership with Lebanese universities to rehabilitate 100 educational institutions destroyed by the 2020 Port of Beirut blasts. Funded by the Qatar Fund for Development, UNESCO will collaborate with Lebanon University, the American University of Beirut and Saint Joseph’s University to rehabilitate 100 schools, Xinhua news agency quoted an official statement as saying on Thursday.
According to the UN agency, the twin blasts on August 4, 2020, partially or fully destroyed at least 163 public and private schools. This is causing trouble for at least 85,000 learners.
The massive explosions killed nearly 200 people, injured at least 6,000 others and left 300,000 homeless.
A large part of the Lebanese capital was destroyed in this disaster.
Investigations have revealed that the explosions were caused by about 500 tonnes of ammonium nitrate dumped at the port.
