Chandigarh. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking release of the state’s pending amount and revised sharing pattern under the Post-Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Castes (PMS-SC) for 2017-2020.
The Chief Minister, in his letter, said that although the Center had amended the scholarship guidelines on December 31, 2020, to introduce a revised sharing pattern (60:40) between the Center and the states.
No decision was given on this issue for the period from April 2017 to March 2020, jeopardizing the future of lakhs of scheduled caste students.
The Chief Minister said that in his earlier communications of October 2018 and February 2020, he had taken up the concern of the State with respect to the outstanding demand under the scheme.
An amount of Rs 1,563 crore for 2017-20 is still pending with the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for release as central share under the scheme. He said that no response has been received on those letters so far.
Stating that Punjab has the highest percentage of Scheduled Caste population in the country, the Chief Minister said that the State deserves special attention in this matter.
“Moreover, being a border state, there is a need to ensure that its youth get education and employment opportunities so that they do not fall prey to anti-social and anti-national elements,” he said.
