Captain Amarinder, who did not have much to do with politics, was taught the first political lesson by his school friend Rajiv Gandhi in 1980 by bringing him to the Congress. In the same year, Captain contested the Lok Sabha elections for the first time and came out winning. In 1984, his talk with Congress over armed extremists worsened and he resigned from Parliament and primary membership of Congress. His difficult decision in his political career landed him in trouble, but after a year’s struggle, in August 1985, Captain Shiromani joined the Akali Dal. Contested and won the assembly elections, Surjit Singh became a minister in Barnala’s government.
In this difficult period of terrorism, in 1987, the Center imposed President’s rule in Punjab by sacking the Barnala government. After five years, in the year 1992, Amarinder Singh also parted ways with the SAD. After this he formed a separate party, Akali Dal (Panthik). From 1998, this party was merged with the Congress.
Political height achieved in 1998
Captain Amarinder Singh, who was looking for a permanent place in politics since 1980, got a political height in 1998. The Congress high command handed over the command of the Congress organization in Punjab to Captain. The Congress, which had gone through a bad phase of Emergency and terrorism, was rebuilt by the Captain. In the assembly elections held in 2002, the Congress won under the leadership of Amarinder.
Bhattal had opposed the Captain
In 2002, the first opposition to Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh in the Congress government was started by the then Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal. There was a tussle between the two on many decisions. At the same time, the captain’s relations with Punjab Congress chief Pratap Bajwa, Shamsher Singh Dulo and Lal Singh were also not good.
Captain adamant in the sharing of rivers
The Captain always stood for the farmers who were considered the pivot of politics in Punjab. After the formation of the government in 2002, Captain Amarinder Singh as Chief Minister took many decisions in the interest of farmers. During this, the most important decision was taken on the issue of sharing of water from rivers. Although the Congress was out of power in 2007, but even after this, the high command showed its confidence by making Captain the head twice.
Heart felt in Punjab itself
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he defeated BJP leader Arun Jaitley from Amritsar by over one lakh votes. After this, the Congress appointed Captain as the deputy leader of the party’s parliamentary party in the Lok Sabha, but Amarinder’s heart remained in Punjab. Seeing his mind, the high command again played bets on the Maharaja of Patiala in 2017 and made the bet in his favor.
Captain weakened in Delhi
At present, Captain’s weak advocacy in Delhi is being considered for the conditions of Punjab Congress. One of the major reasons for the weakness of the Captain in Delhi is that the Congress veterans who supported the Captain are no more. The biggest loss to the Captain was the death of Ahmed Patel, Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary. Due to the absence of treasurer Motilal Vora, the lobbying of the captain was weakened. Both of them were leaders of thought. Now new faces have been entered in Delhi, due to which the equations are constantly changing.
