New Delhi . Due to the treatment of patients suffering from Kovid 19 in the country, the biomedical waste has increased manifold. The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has given this information in response to a question in the Lok Sabha on Friday. In fact, a Lok Sabha MP asked in an unstarred question whether there has been a significant increase in the number of bio-medical waste since March 2020 after the global pandemic of Kovid. If yes, what is the details of three years? Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ashnini Kumar Choubey has admitted that more bio-medical waste has been generated in the country than ever before due to COVID-19.
Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ashwani Kumar Choubey informed that according to the information compiled through the Kovid 19 Biomedical Waste App, a total of 56,898 tonnes of Kovid Bio Medical Waste was generated between June 2020 and June 2021.
He said that before Corona, only 615 tonnes of bio-medical waste was generated in the year 2019-20, 608 in 2018-19 and 531 tonnes in 2017-18. These data show that there has been an increase in biomedical waste production over the past three years. The Union Minister of State informed that the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified the Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1980. The Central Pollution Control Board has prepared guidelines for the disposal of bio-medical waste. It is also arranged in health centers.
