Congress targets Assam CM over population control remark

1 of 1

Guwahati. The opposition Congress in Assam on Friday criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his statement on controlling the population of the northeastern state.

Addressing the media on Thursday, Sarma had said that the immigrant Muslim population should adopt decent family planning norms, as land and resources are limited.

If the population is not controlled, various problems and crimes will endanger the future of the new generations, he said.

In response, Assam Congress’s media department chair Bobita Sharma said that the Chief Minister’s statement regarding population explosion in Assam is based on misinformation and misleading.

He said that according to the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS) conducted by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and released in December 2020, the total fertility rate (TFR) has declined in most Indian states in the last five years.

He said that “According to the same survey, the fertility rate of women in Assam has come down from 2.2 in 2015-16 to 1.9 in 2020-21 and the rate of 1.9 is less than 2.1, which means that the future population of Assam is the present population. will be less than that.

Therefore, there is no question of increase in population as per the figures of the ministry, the Congress leader said.

“If the chief minister is referring to the future population explosion due to immigration of people from Bangladesh and Pakistan due to the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act, then perhaps his concern is justified,” the Congress leader said.

“We in the Congress party assure the Chief Minister that we will take definite steps and try our best to protect the Kamakhya temple and his house from such encroachment,” he said.

Sharma said, “If the population explosion continues, then one day the land of the famous Kamakhya temple will be encroached upon, even my house will be encroached upon. It is indecent for a chief minister of a state who should be expected to be well versed with the demographic facts.
