America: Meat producer confirms to pay ransom to hackers

1 of 1

Washington| JBS, the major US meat producer, has confirmed it has paid a $11 million ransom last week in response to a criminal hack to keep its operations running smoothly. In the US, GBS is headquartered in Greely, Colorado. JBS USA had to temporarily halt production at its beef plants across the country following a ransomware attack that severely affected its computer systems in North America and Australia, Xinhua news agency reported.

It said in a statement on Wednesday that most of the company’s facilities were operational at the time of payment.

The company, in consultation with internal IT professionals and third-party cyber security experts, decided to mitigate any unforeseen issues related to the attack and ensure that no data is excluded, the company said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has reportedly blamed Revil, a Russian-speaking group, for the attack on JBS. However, the Russian government has denied any involvement in cyberattacks such as the JBS hack, calling these allegations baseless.
